Reading on the Green

Encouraging children to share their reading experience, Reading On The Green is our fortnightly children’s book group designed with and for children aged 6 — 12.

Hosted by our Everyday Extraordinary Curator Danni Ebanks-Ingram, Reading On The Green deep dives into books from our children’s Book Shares, as well as extending invitations to local children’s writers from across the city and region.

Purpose

Children in the neighbourhood have been exploring some of the activities and experiments in Alys Fowler’s Grow, Forage and Make, and will be deep diving into other books from the Book Share too that draw upon interconnecting themes from CIVIC SQUARE’s mission.

These include titles such as:
  • Book Of Play — Michael Rosen & Charlotte Trounce
  • Losing Eden — Lucy Jones
  • The Song of the Tree—Coralie Bickford-Smith
  • Big Ideas For Curious Minds—School Of Life
Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that children who are the most engaged with literacy are three times more likely to have higher levels of mental wellbeing than children who are the least engaged (39.4% vs 11.8%) and children who enjoy reading and writing are happier with their lives.

Whilst a simple intervention, through Reading On The Green we want children to have a little more agency and confidence to explore who they are, their neighbourhoods, and learn together with their peers. We believe that books play an important role in helping children to dream, to imagine, to learn and be inspired — and absolutely to inspire the grown ups in their lives too with what they have been learning or thinking about.

How TO Participate

Reading on the Green is an informal and relaxed reading session for children aged 6 — 12. You’re welcome to attend every fortnight, for a couple of sessions, or for a one-off as you prefer. There is no need to register, just bring yourself along!

About Beyond Books

Beyond Books acknowledges and treasures space for reading, lending, purchasing and discussing what books are, have been and could be to us. Bringing forward voices that encourage and cultivate conversations, offering narratives and ideas informed by our identities, lived experiences and dreams, it is a platform where books and other means of sharing stories are used to democratise knowledge, imagination, and enjoyment.

We envisage Beyond Books will be key to unlock the dream matter in all of us, strengthening our infrastructure to unleash the capacity to engage, learn, grow and delve into many possibilities for ourselves and our places.

At the heart of Beyond Books are conversations; conversations and experiences that offer us new ideas, new experiences and shared learning, something we are proud to be designing and exploring through peer to peer learning infrastructure as part of the Neighbourhood Doughnut portfolio of work at CIVIC SQUARE.
